Corporate Crime Comics

    (Kitchen Sink, 1977-1979)
™ and ©1978 Leonard Rifas and respective contributing artists

One of the more worthy social issues comics to come along, Corporate Crime Comics takes aim at the abuses of large corporations. Working with a collection of artists and writers, editor Leonard Rifas tells it all: from the killing of nuclear plant worker Karen Silkwood to the old favorites of false advertising and tax dodges. Jaded consumers of today will likely find new grounds for cynicism when reading about events like the Triangle Fire of 1911 that killed 146 poor garment workers when their unsafe sweatshop building caught fire—trapping the workers who were normally locked inside during the workday to discourage them from leaving early. Governmental abuse also figures heavily into many of the stories, such as the infamous Teapot Dome scandal, or when Richard Nixon (then vice president) was alleged to have been involved in a 1954 scheme to void Aristotle Onassis’ Jidda Agreement, an oil shipping deal that had offended the wealthy AramCo oil monopoly.
