Being like nothing else can be a handicap, when it comes time to market a comic book. Nevertheless, if you like comics that are wholly unusual and original with attractive, likable characters and an unusual point of view that’s desperately wonky and unexpectedly odd — you’re likely to like Hubie.

Hubie literally grows up in front of a TV and, when he’s awakened from his media-induced coma, he finds that he’s grown up, his parents have deserted him, and his world’s gone all weird (which sounds like a perfect metaphor for growing up). And during a stress attack, his id and superego escape from his burned-out brain in the form of Styler (a ’30s-style cartoon critter) and Stub (a Frankenstein Jr. thing). In the great outside, they encounter the mysterious Mr. Platinum (who has X-ray vision and a real flair with hair scrunches) and, naturally, a really cute girl named Jenna. What all of this ultimately means is beyond me, but that will just make future issues unexpected pleasures.
