Manga Shi

Just to mix things up a bit, Crusade did a “manga” version of Shi: The Way of the Warrior, a series already acclaimed for its keen sense of Japanese culture. The new version used the stylized artwork so characteristic of most manga, and even went so far as to be bound with the spine on the right, encouraging readers to move from right to left, as comics are read in Japan.

The most interesting element, however, was the telling of Ana Ishikawa’s story through the eyes of the illegitimate son (shiseji) of crimelord Masahiro Arashi. To him, Ana is not a tortured soul whose soul longs for peace but whose heart feels a need for vengeance…no, she’s just “some ninja b*tch who is messing up his plans.” It’s a very interesting way to tell a familiar story—something at which Shi has always excelled.
