Gen of Hiroshima
(Educomics, 1980)
™ and ©1981 Keiji Nakazawa
Set in Japan in early 1945, Keiji Nakazawa’s Gen of Hiroshima, a black-and-white title from Educomics, looks at the human side of the Japanese effort during the last months of World War II. Here, Gen and his family pay the price for a war they don’t believe in. His father is jailed for denouncing the war, his older brother is drafted into working in a munitions factory, his younger brother has been evacuated to the Japanese countryside with his third-grade class, and there is little food to eat. Times are hard for those who don’t support the Japanese war effort, and Nakazawa’s story is as intriguing as it is heart-rending. It should be noted that writer/artist Keiji Nakazawa also produced the excellent I Saw It! title which was a first-hand account of the bombing of Hiroshima.
