Strange Adventures

For most of its 244-issue run, Strange Adventures was host to a rather unremarkable collection of science-fiction and monster stories. Several of the characters that got their start here, however, were remade into some of DC’s most inventive and original heroes.

First came the Atomic Knights in issue #117. These long-running characters were a sort of post-apocalyptic Knights of the Round Table. Later, their origin was revised, à la Miracleman, to state that the adventures had all been computer-inspired delusions of the lead character. Issue #180 saw the introduction of Animal Man, a rather plain hero who took on the powers of animals around him. Writer Grant Morrison gave him a surreal bent, and used him to represent man’s struggle with nature. Finally came the eerie Deadman in issue #205, a great character from the start. Deadman was the spirit of a murdered aerialist who inhabits the bodies the living in order to fight evil.
