Wha…Huh?

This one-shot special will appeal to aficionados of Not Brand Echh and What The-?! The parody of the Marvel universe asks a variety of “what if” questions that are designed to tickle fanboy funnybones. A variety of modern-day scribes, including such heavyweights as Brian Bendis, Mark Millar, and Mark Waid, contribute their formidable talents, but the most surprising writer on board is none other than The Man himself—Stan Lee—who asks himself, “What if I never broke into comics?!”

Some of the bits—such as “What if DC let us do Batman/Daredevil” (Hell freezes over)—are single-panel gags. Others—such as Brian K. Vaughan’s highly amusing “What if Black Panther were actually white?”—run for two or three pages. Some are inventive and most are funny, but there are a couple of stinkers (so to speak), such as the juvenile “What if Galactus got food poisoning?”

Jim Mahfood’s crude but comic renderings fit the material, but some variety (a little Sergio Aragonés or Fred Hembeck, anyone?) would’ve been nice.
