Created by comic–book legend Alex Toth for a Hanna–Barbera cartoon in the late 60s, Space Ghost is given the dark and gritty treatment in this post–millennium update by writer Joe Kelly and artist Ariel Olivetti. Space Ghost was resurrected as a comedic TV talk–show host in the 90s, but this series has no relation to that program other than the fact that the same characters from the original Saturday morning animated series are being used. Kelly reveals Space Ghost’s tumultuous past, betrayed by the police force and seeking vengeance. Kelly aims for the brass–knuckled punch of 30s pulps. However, the result bares little resemblance to the beloved character: it’s not so much a makeover, as a do–over.
