Giant-Size Doc Savage

    (Marvel, 1975)
™ and ©1975 Marvel Comics Group

While the cover touts this reprint of issues #1 and 2 of Marvel’s short-lived Doc Savage series as the “Mind-Boggling Movie Issue,” the story remains more true to The Man of Bronze novel, first published in pulp magazine format in 1933, then reprinted in the 60s by Bantam Books. Sadly, Doc has seldom survived as long in the comics, radio, or movies as well as he did in his original 181 issues of Doc Savage Magazine. Marvel tried to bring the character slightly up to date, but as Dark Horse readers know Doc has always been best when set in the 1930s and 40s, and they eventually stopped trying to modernize him.

Clark Savage, Jr. was raised from the cradle to be a superman, righting wrongs and punishing evildoers. With his five aids, he uncovered his father’s legacy to him and saved a hidden land from exploitation and destruction.
