Jungle War Stories
(Dell, 1962-1965)
™ and ©1963 Dell Publishing Co.
Jungle War Stories comprises the first eleven issues of what later became Guerrilla War. The series began in 1963, just as U.S. involvement in the Viet Nam conflict was ramping up. As can be expected, the stories were extremely anti-Communist, with the U.S. soldiers starring as the brave heroes come to save the day. A guide, “Viet Cong: The Face of the Enemy,” on the inside front cover, detailed the torture, village burnings, and other VC activities which justified U.S. involvement in putting a stop to them.
Typical of the U.S. characters was Captain Duke Larson, a military observer who went on mission after mission, wreaking havoc for the Viet Cong wherever he went. However, Captain Larson was not of the grim and gritty mold. He was always drawn as a clean-cut hero, who relied on his mind more than his fists or marksmanship.
