The deficiencies in art and script here are balanced by an attempt to try something new with the tired old barbarian. Tarak is a gloomy introspective type, but then so would you be if your partner were grabbed by a demon. What makes him different is that the caring characteristics of the 1980s liberal have been applied to his personality, resulting in a vegetarian barbarian staunch in his advocacy of animal rights. The script is sometimes ponderous, initially relying too heavily on Tarak’s first person narrative, and as an artist, Kevin Rasel is looking to the best. He’s nowhere near them yet, but better to reach for the stars than to be another Jim Lee copyist. An oddity overall, but a worthy one.
