There’s no shortage of whiny, self-indulgent angst among many of today’s small-press creators. Only a few have been able to channel these overpowering emotions into anything that people would care to read about, and fewer still have been able to turn it into an art form.
Lest anyone think otherwise, that is not some kind of backhanded slam against creator Ivan Brunetti. In fact, no higher praise can be given. Brunetti is comics’ answer to Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, both of whom have turned their own emotional suffering into a powerful finished product. Brunetti, by all rights, should be crippled by his seemingly paralyzing feelings of self-loathing and worthlessness. Yet he turns them into 32 captivating one-page featurettes that evoke sympathy at some times, humor at others.
Not all are autobiographical features. Brunetti also demonstrates his knowledge of historical figures in entertainment, writing, philosophy, and other fields by presenting bios of these individuals in this tabloid-size volume. It’s a shame that this long-awaited issue is only the fourth in more than a decade, but it’s one of those series in which every issue is worth the wait.
