Crisis was an offshoot of Britain’s 2000 A.D. and began with two ongoing storylines, Third World War and The New Statesmen. Of these, Third World War is by far the most disturbing, hinting as it does at a geopolitical shift where wars are tolerated—even expected—on sort of an ongoing low boil. The goal is to prevent “Wargasm,” the escalation of these regional squabbles into a full-fledged conflict where “industrial-sized” numbers of people are killed. This concept is demonstrated in Third World War drawing from real-life examples of U.S.-supplied aid to rebellious factions in backwater locations across the world.

This magazine-sized series premiered in as a biweekly in 1988. It went monthly beginning with issue #50, continuing as such until the series conclusion in 1991.
