Woody Woodpecker (Harvey)

™ and © 1991 Walter Lantz Productions

Over the years, Walter Lantz’ Woody Woodpecker has starred in scores of popular cartoons, and enjoyed a long run in his first comic book series. This second series, which lasted only seven issues, was part of a 1990’s revival by Harvey Comics of several classic characters, including Casper and Richie Rich.

Woody first appeared in 1942, in the pages of The Funnies # 64. His character is, at first glance, reminiscent of Disney’s Donald Duck, who had his debut about eight years earlier: they’re both a little slow-witted, fiery-tempered and always planning a crazy scheme or two. Luckily, when Woody finds himself in trouble, which is most of the time, he has his kid sidekicks, Splinter and Knothead, to bail him out.
