The Broons

The Broons (most likely a Scottish take on “The Browns”) are an extended, sometimes dysfunctional, Scottish family, and their adventures—which take the form of one-page gags—are collected in this black-and-white graphic album. The humor is found in the family’s quest for a new tea set, Paw Broon’s efforts to remember Maw’s special day, the plight of the family’s television, and other situation comedy-type fare. The dialogue captures the stereotypical Scottish brogue, making it nearly impenetrable to American readers. On the other hand, and the artwork is beautiful—crystal-clear and easy to follow. Check out The Broons for a tasty dose of domestic comedy.

This hardback series was published on a biannual basis beginning in 1940, rotating years with Oor Wullie.
