Magik (2nd Series)

This is a difficult story to grasp since it requires X-Men: Black Sun as background material. That mini-series established these facts: Magik was resurrected and became guardian of the dimensional borders of this reality. The plot is straightforward, as a daemon army controlled by an unknown entity has invaded Limbo. Magik reluctantly accepts Nightcrawler as a comrade-in-arms to defend these tenuous borders. Interestingly enough, this story is narrated through Nightcrawler’s observations instead of the standard third person point of view. Most unusual is the artwork itself. Panels exhibit non-linear lines and borders with an occasional attempt at painted images. This technique is very experimental and it’s a puzzling combination with heavy inks taken to extremes. These styles are interesting, but clash when comic book drawings are placed in sweeping Stygian landscapes.
