Bumbercomix
(Starhead)
©1988 Starhead Comix, stories © their respective authors
Seattle-based Starhead Comics put out this 1988 series under a grant from the Bumbershoot Arts Festival. The issues were free, even though they contained some of the most interesting work to be found in the Seattle underground “comix” scene. Included are works such as Peter (Hate) Bagge’s “Girly Girl,” J.R. Williams’ quietly bizarre “State Fair,” and Mark Zingarelli’s “Eatin’ Out with Eddie Longo” (in which a far-too-enthusiastic Eddie relates the history of the hot dog).
Overall, the series is lots of fun. It manages the neat trick of bringing readers the offbeat humor that permeates the undergrounds, without getting too lost in the patently bizarre. Altogether, Bumbercomix makes for a good introduction to the rich world of alternative comix.
