It’s pretty to look at.

The best time to read Burning Circle would be late at night, when the eyes are too tired to read the dialogue and can, instead, enjoy creator David Boller’s beautiful painted art.

Boller’s linguistic partner is James Pruett. It’s difficult to tell whether Boller or Pruett is responsible for the following line: “I had weird dreams. I was bitten by a cobra but it felt good … like going to a place where you feel really comfortable … kind of like home when you were a little kid … but don’t ask me what the snakes had to do with it …” Whoever is the culprit should be brought up on style charges. It’s possible the script was attacked by a vicious boldface creature before making it to print; how else to explain the fact that the wrong words keep being emphasized in practically every single speech balloon and caption?

The story of the world’s greatest medium, Katja Zakkov, and her spiritual alter ego, Kaos Moon, is fascinating. This comic book needed a good once-over by a merciless editor before hitting the stands. Such an editor would have done well to give the following advice: Avoid the use of boldface in a comic book unless you really know what you’re doing. It’s to be hoped that the scripting will improve, as the series progresses; it would be a shame for all this lovely art to go to waste.
