Palookaville

Palookaville is the tony literary product of pseudonymous A–list designer and illustrator Seth (Gregory Gallant) and the high–end publishing values of Canada’s Drawn and Quarterly Press. A preoccupation with the popular aesthetic sensibility of the mid–twentieth century informs Seth's illustration and his stories often deal with loss, regret, and the march of progress. Palookaville appears on fine off–white paper in two–color format. New issues have come out approximately once or twice a year since the title debuted in 1991.

Seth merges disparate artistic sensibilities with surprisingly compelling results. He has been compared to such varied auteurs as movie directors David Lynch and Nicholas Ray, and comics stars Harvey Pekar and the Hernandez Brothers.

So far, two stories from Palookaville have been combined and reprinted as trade paperbacks. “It’s A Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken” (issues #4–9) chronicle the artist’s own investigation into the life of a forgotten cartoonist from the 1940s. “Clyde Fans: Book 1” (issues #10–14) comprises the first third of a 350–page story arc still in progress about two temperamentally discordant brothers and their electric fan business.
