Millennium Edition: Kingdom Come
(DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
The four-issue Kingdom Come mini-series, written by Mark Waid and lavishly painted by Alex Ross, was the super-hero comic highlight of 1996, if not the entire decade of the 90s. In this Elseworlds (non-continuity) story set 20 years in the future, Superman and the other DC first-generation heroes have retired, leaving crimefighting to a new crew of reckless, irresponsible, and wantonly violent characters. Many readers recognized Waid’s plot as a call for a return to the simpler values of the Silver Age, since tarnished by the grim-and-gritty approach of the 80s and 90s. Ross’s sumptuous art gave the DC characters an iconic look that meshed perfectly with Waid’s grand intentions, to staggering effect. As such, the first issue is a splendid latter-day entry in DC’s Millennium series of reprints, though the entire storyline is readily available in graphic novel form.
