The DC Universe had, over time, gone from being one world to a whole collection of them—a multiverse. Then, during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the multiverse was destroyed—retroactively. Suddenly, fifty years of continuity were gone. In the post-Crisis world, much of what readers knew to be fact had never actually happened. The question then was, “What is the real history of the DC universe?”

In 1986, DC attempted to answer this question in two graphic novels. The History of the DC Universe lays out the grand tapestry of characters and events that serve as a backdrop for DC’s various storylines. It begins before the dawn of life on Earth and ranges into the 30th century, time of the Legion of Super-Heroes. What falls in between is a grand tapestry of heroes, villains, gods, and extraordinary mortals.
