Priest

About the same time he was experimenting with an angel come-to-earth in Avengelyne, Rob Liefeld introduced this misguided tale of a Priest-turned-gun-totin’-vigilante. The three issue mini-series raised protests from various religious groups, but didn’t sell particularly well.

The story centers around Father Michael, a former chaplain in the Gulf War who has returned to life in the local parish. St. Marks is located in what appears to be an urban war zone, with beatings and drive-by shootings happening on a more-or-less constant basis. The mild-mannered priest seems helpless to stop the violence, but thanks to a multiple personality disorder, he turns into someone who can. As Priest, he’s an M-16-packing vigilante who recites Bible verses while coldly blowing away thugs. Liefeld (and scripter Robert Napton) are actually in good form here, with the unfortunate effect of pointing out exactly how grisly the killings are.
