Apache Trail was a standard Western series from Steinway in the late 1950s. The main stories in each issue were focused primarily on conflicts between Indian tribes and the US Army, reflecting a slightly higher level of sophistication than many comic books from the time. Indians were depicted not as a unified block of “savages,” but as a diverse culture containing both good and bad. Once this fact was established, however, the stories proceeded with the same rifle-shooting, fort-burning, scalp-hunting abandon as most action-oriented Westerns. Apache Trail also included filler stories of the usual Western variety about outlaws, settler families and farmers vs. cattlemen.
