Witchcraft: La Terreur

    (Vertigo, 1998)
™ and ©1998 DC Comics

The three witches return again in James Robinson’s tale of love, magic, and desperation amidst the terrors of the French Revolution. Having suffered for years from callous treatment by the French royalty, the peasants had rebelled. But as is the case in so many revolutions, the oppressed became the oppressors. Soon, not just the royals, but minor nobles—and anybody said to be associated with them—were sent to the guillotine after sham trials.

Jean-Pierre Roland was a minor noble who had thought his small title and charming ways would lead him to his fortune. Instead, they may have amounted to a death sentence. He sought protection at the home of a family friend, and there fell in love with his host’s daughter. When the father learned that the two had become lovers, however, he reported Roland. Now the daughter, who has been visited by visions of witches, will do anything to win his release.
