The Ring of the Nibelung (Vol. 3)

Its prelude begins in dark mood, as Mimé (pronounced mee-meh) broods on the events that have transpired while forging another sword for the impetuous youth, Siegfried. Siegfried allows a bear to frighten Mimé into working faster but he breaks the sword on an anvil, like he had done in the past. The dwarf claims that he is mother and father in one but Siegfried knows Mimé is lying. Siegfried demands the truth and Mimé reluctantly retells the story of his mother, Sieglindé. As proof, Mimé presents him shards of Nothung. Excitedly, Siegfried demands a sword forged from the shards and rushes into the woods. Once again Mimé is alone with his thoughts and he cannot reforge Nothung. When a wanderer engages Mimé in a contest of questions and wins the dwarf’s head, the answer is given, ‘Only one who has never learned fear shall reforge the sword Nothung.’ But who will that be?
