This intriguing little spiral–bound book from Slave Labor Graphics celebrates Polynesian food with recipes from Don the Beachcomber’s and Trader Vic’s, as well as other tiki restaurants. In addition to the traditional cookbook sections—appetizers; entrées; soups, salads, and sides; desserts; and drinks—there are also fascinating—yes, really!—historical facts about Polynesian food and interesting anecdotes about its popularity in “The Golden Age of Hollywood.” Writer Jeff Berry also points out that this food was in its heyday in a time when fats and red meats were staples of the American diet. For the health–conscious, these recipes will have to be tweaked to accommodate the modern dietary sensibilities.
