Ghostly Haunts

By the mid-1970s, DC and Marvel were spending most of their energy and resources on super-hero titles, which gave perennial also-ran Charlton an opening to compete in the low-rent district of horror/mystery comics. Titles like Ghostly Haunts and its spinoffs, including The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves, featured the tried-and-true formula of the horror “host” introducing three short stories per issue, all offering chilling and generally predictable tales of zombies, vampires, trolls, witches, and demons.

The best efforts of the artists and writers to imitate the spooky and atmospheric work in DC and Marvel comics like The House of Mystery and Tower of Shadows were usually undone by Charlton’s tacky packaging and super-cheap production. Ghostly Haunts folded for good in 1978.
