Dick Tracy “Unprinted Stories”
(Blackthorne, 1987)
™ and ©1987 Tribune Media Services
This series presents comic strips featuring Chester Gould’s legendary detective, Dick Tracy. The stories are considered “unprinted” because they have not been previously collected into comic book format. The collection was produced using Gould’s own scrapbooks of syndicate proofs, with the permission of his daughter.
The strips contain all the classic Tracy elements, from his trademark hat to his two-way wrist radio, and are interspersed with Tracy’s Crimestopper Textbook tips. As an example of the series, the 48-page first issue contains the “Joe Period” story arc from 1956, which had previously appeared in comic book format only in a censored version.
Joe Period is a wheel-man: a high-speed driver with a souped up car that can even outrun the police. When Joe gets mixed up in a love triangle gone bad, it’s up to Dick Tracy, Joe, and policewoman trainee Lizz to bring him to justice.
