This authorized biography tells the origin of the rock band Metallica in comic form. It starts with guitarist James Hetfield bemoaning the sad state of the 1981 L.A. rock scene. To Hetfield, it seemed that the clubs were full of posers and glam-rockers. What the world needed, he thought, was a real band.

After many false starts, he finally pulled a band together and called it Metallica. Their no-holds-barred style won them a cult following, but there were still many rough times ahead of them. They had to replace their egomaniacal lead guitarist, sleep on the studio floor while recording their album, and play gig after gig in order to build a reputation. They persevered, though, and eventually served as the opening act for Ozzy Osbourne. They followed this up with their own world tour, where a tragic accident took the life of their bassist. Even then, they pushed on, becoming better than ever.
