Superman/Gen13

This prestige format edition, which collects the original three-issue limited series of the same name, is a wonderfully wild, heroic, hilarious clash between generations old and new. The Gen13 team of Adam Hughes and Lee Bermejo here send their super-powered kids on a field trip to Metropolis, where the strongest of them—clumsy, naïve, hero-worshiping Caitlin Fairchild—runs into her idol, Superman (and we mean, really runs into him. So hard, in fact, that she develops amnesia from the encounter). Dazed from the encounter, Caitlin gets it into her head that she’s actually Supergirl (don’t ask), and sets off to help the citizens of Metropolis. The rest of Gen13, knowing how much damage her “help” is likely to cause, reluctantly seeks out the aid of Superman, whom they regard as the biggest square in the super-hero world. What starts as a bit of fun-poking at the very image of the Man of Steel turns into a resonant tale about why characters like Superman endure, even in a generation whose members view authority and true-blue heroes with more than a little contempt.
