Millennium Edition: Military Comics

    (DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics

To celebrate the end of one millennium and the beginning of another, DC Comics published a series of Millennium Editions that reprinted significant books from the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages of Comics. This gorgeous reproduction of Military Comics from 1941 features the first appearance of Blackhawk, the Golden Age aviator who sought to avenge the murders of his brother and sister by organizing a team of assistants to help him take on the Nazis. As the strip developed, Blackhawks team became—according to comics historian Les Daniels—”a multinational squad of freedom fighters. The team consisted of André, Olaf, Chuck, Stanislaus, Hendrickson, and Chop-Chop,” and “their teamwork and camaraderie became the trademark of the feature,” eventually earning them their own title in 1944. Even without super-powers, the Blackhawks stand among the greatest heroes of the Golden Age of Comics.
