Police Comics

Premiering in the fall of 1941, Police Comics featured few police, but lots of crimefighting super-heroes. First and most famous was Plastic Man, who debuted in Police Comics #1. This stretchable super-hero was not only great for visual gag appeal, but would later become the prototype for DC’s Elongated Man, and Marvel’s Mister Fantastic (leader of the Fantastic Four). Also appearing in the first issue was future Nazi-fighter Firebrand, and the explosive Human Bomb.

Issue #8 marked the first appearance of the original Manhunter (a police officer turned crimefighter by night, and no relation to the DC character by the same name). He was followed three issues later by the Spirit, who was making the transition from newspaper strips to comic books. Later issues would add teen humor character Candy and others. Beginning with issue #103, they were all dropped and Police Comics became a regular crime comic.
