B.P.R.D.: The Soul of Venice
(Dark Horse, 2003)
™ and © Dark Horse Comics, Inc.
B.P.R.D. (the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) is a spin-off from Mike Mignola’s acclaimed Hellboy series, featuring Abe Sapian, a genetically engineered amphibian; Roger the Homunculus, an artificial man; Johann Krause, a spirit medium inhabiting a shell; and Elizabeth Sherman, a pyro-kinetic. The quartet travels to Venice where the romantic spirit of the city has been fouled by the essence of an ancient evil. Something has caused an increase in domestic violence as well as the explosion of the city’s water pipes. Johann Krause senses the source of the ethereal disturbance that dates back to a Roman man who “made the Marquis de Sade look like a Quaker.”
The art by Michael Avon Oeming, best known for Powers, is appropriately dark and moody.
— George Haberberger
