Millie the Lovable Monster
(Dell, 1962-1964, 1972-1973)
™ and ©1962 Dell Publishing Co.
Here’s a wild idea—suppose you have a big, purple, and green dinosaur with great big eyelashes and lots of charm that loves to have fun and play with kids. Think it might catch on? Dell Comics was hoping so, with Millie the Loveable Monster, a totally wholesome comic from the early 1960s aimed at very young kids. Millie comes to the town of Midway and immediately captures the hearts of everyone except one old sourpuss industrialist who can’t believe that people would really love a giant purple monster. But Millie’s pleasant nature and big old eyelashes carry the day, and soon the millionaire builds Millie her own haunted house to live in with other supernatural friends. Despite the obvious potential, Millie the Loveable Monster must have been too far ahead of her time, since the comics appeared only sporadically until the early 1970s.
