NecroWar

Strangely, this serious, adult-skewing space-war comic book really isn’t all that different from Simon Furman’s work on Transformers, except the heroes of Ebon Squad have to put on their symbiote-like armor (which, oddly enough, makes them look like The Silverhawks).

Beautifully drawn by Adi Granov, the first installment does a solid job of introducing the premise and principals (including the death-obsessed Arnez and ice-cold blonde Colt) and the cosmic threat of The Progeny. Sadly, if there’s a weak spot in the series, it’s in the villains. Furman spends page after page building them up in the reader’s mind to be a truly formidable threat, but, when they finally step out from behind the curtain, they seem about as intimidating as the bad guys from Gerry Anderson’s Terrahawks. And it wouldn’t be a proper British series if everyone didn’t die in the end, and, without giving anything away, everyone does—and it isn’t the end.
