Cyclone Bill & The Tall Tales
(Moonstone, 2004-2006)
™ and © Moonstone
As a camera crew films her in the year 2009, filmmaker Margarita Bloom kneels at the grave of Elvis Presley and begs his ghost to stop haunting her. As she explains her actions to bemused tourists and an annoyed security guard, the storyline shifts between her and scenes from her documentary on the legendary rock band, Cyclone Bill and the Tall Tales. We follow the ascent of musical prodigy William Czynkowski, his transformation of an obscure Chicago–land band into a national phenomenon, and his twilight struggle with both success and his self–proclaimed nemesis, musical anarchist Oscar Mundane. Writer and illustrator Dan Dougherty invokes numerous clichés in his subjects (such as tragic deaths and selling one’s soul to the devil), but they’re effective nonetheless.
