Comics for girls are a rarity in today’s comic marketplace because the vast majority features male adolescent power fantasies and women that are rarely depicted realistically. Alternatively, magazines targeted at female adolescents are usually publicity engines for the latest heart throb or pop music idol that is hot this week. Although Smile does feature short profiles on-up and-coming boy bands and the ubiquitous advice column, its emphasis on magna and anime definitely sets it apart from other magazines.

Billed as a magazine for the Gen-X girl, Smile’s spotlight on comics like Sailor Moon and video games that girls might appreciate offers a distinct option from Tiger Beat and others of that type.
