Playbear
(Eros, 1995)
™ and © Eros Comics, a division of Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
Full of humor, and a satire of everything from Playboy to 1950s good-girl art to funny animal comics, Playbear delivers what it promises—”good girl entertainment for bad boys”—and then some. Created, written and drawn by Felix, Playbear tells the many and varied tales of Buddy—a diminutive but oversexed toy-sized bear, and sex kittens Lil and Jill, who mostly stand around (or lie around in various positions) trading quips and setting up clever sight gags with Buddy. The short stories tap various aspects of pop culture, and the girls could be dead ringers for Bettie Page. Playbear doesn’t pretend—or even aspire to—the depth of some of Eros Comix’s other offerings, but then, that is probably the title’s main strength. That, and the titillating artwork, of course. Lighthearted and breezy though it may be, Playbear is still an erotic comic, intended for mature audiences only.
