Supergirl Archives

    (DC, 2001)
™ and ©2001 DC Comics

These archives of Supergirl’s adventures are perfect for sharing with kids, especially girls. Some ’60s Superman weirdness (including Super-Pets, the Superman emergency squad, etc.) may need explaining. Showcasing the work of writers Robert Bernstein, Otto Binder, and Jerry Siegel, plus artists Wayne Boring, Stan Kaye, George Klein, Jim Mooney, and Curt Swan, it’s a cross-section of the early Silver Age at DC. R.C. Harvey’s introduction also helps put things in perspective.

Girls and boys will eagerly follow along, as Supergirl falls in love, celebrates her 16th birthday, joins The Legion of Super-Heroes, and, most notably, has her existence revealed to the world by cousin what’s–his–name. This is in nine parts, showing Supergirl: powerless; trapped in Kandor; time–traveling; becoming more powerful than Superman; and suffering six red kryptonite effects.

Reading these chapters together makes the reader aware of discrepancies. Lex Luthor forgets about his visits from a super–look–alike, when the real thing appears. But it’s a quibble. Supergirl Archives makes entertaining bedtime reading.
