Punisher/Batman: Deadly Knights

    (Marvel, 1994)
™ and © 1994 Marvel Characters, Inc. and DC Comics

This Marvel-published sequel to DC’s Batman/Punisher: Lake of Fire finds longtime Punisher foe Jigsaw depending on the Joker to set him up as the head of Gotham City’s crime families in exchange for a percentage of the profits. Of course, this turn of events brings together Batman—the real one, not Azrael—and the Punisher, but unlike the featured players in most inter-company crossovers, these two loner-vigilantes never quite team-up. There’s a lot of macho posturing, chest-thumping, and heated exchanges, in spite of which, our grim-and-gritty anti-heroes manage to get the job done.

This is excellent, intense stuff from writer Chuck Dixon (Nightwing, Birds of Prey, Robin), and the Joker looks really cool as drawn by artist John Romita Jr. (The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker: Spider-Man, Daredevil).
