Spider-Man: Breakout

™ and © 2005 Marvel Characters, Inc.

The first issue of a five-issue mini-series, this tie-in to the events that take place in The New Avengers #1 features a score of minor-league villains, including the U-Foes. However, it’s unclear why these villains deserved their own story. Moreover, this is billed as a Spider-Man mini-series, but the story in this issue focuses on these villains and, because of that alone, is not worth the time.

The issue starts two years ago, as the villains plot to escape from prison to hunt for a fortune. When the plot is discovered, they all believe one of their own sold them out and they are transferred to the super-maximum security prison: The Raft. Now, the breakout is in effect, and they see their chance to get out, get their revenge, and finally seek the fortune they’ve waited for.

While the premise isn’t much, the art, in spots, is dynamic, and Manuel Garcia uses interesting camera angles. Tony Bedard’s dialogue is enjoyable and sharp, and his character interactions are believable.
