Crime Clinic
(Slave Labor, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Dylan Williams
Harkening back to the hard-boiled crime comics of the ’50s, Crime Clinic tells stripped-down stories of gangsters, murderers, drunks and others with no hope and a life of crime. Each story has something in common—it ends badly for the protagonist, reinforcing the idea that crime doesn’t pay. Examples of such sordid tales include those of a writer dumped in the bay with concrete shoes, a mob moll turning informant, and the true story of the St. Valentine’s Day massacre.
Crime Clinic’s art is mostly sketchy and basic, as if more detail would only detract from the violence and vengeance motifs of the stories. Only the text is approached differently; some stories are told in word balloons and crude artwork while others are narration and crude artwork.
