When the first Star Wars film premiered in 1977, it was not only the most popular movie up to that time, it was also one of Marvel Comics’ most successful licensed properties. The original six-issue comic adaptation sold so well, Marvel reprinted it multiple times and also re-released it as a treasury edition and, finally, in this slim paperback by Del Ray. If you want to enjoy Howard Chaykin’s (American Flagg) artwork on this groundbreaking series, this is not the best showcase: production values are low, the pages are reprinted in black and white and are reduced from standard comic-page size to fit on a 4X6 page. Still, for those grownups who still don’t want to be caught reading comic books, it’s certainly a convenient, low-profile format, and still manages to convey some small slice of the grandeur of the greatest space-fantasy film of all.
