On Rankor Island, a city the size of Manhattan, it’s the criminals who live in fear—of a mysterious, hulking vigilante known as Citizen Pain. All police efforts to stop his violent war on crime are hampered by public approval of his actions. Throw in another costumed vigilante known as Scalpel and a serial killer known as Family Man, as well as various drug dealers and kidnappers, and you’ve got a troubled city where no one feels truly safe. Detective Cheri Major, commander of special task force “Violent Messiahs,” has her job further complicated when Citizen Pain contacts her, simultaneously aiding her cause while resisting capture. Pain has a few secrets he can’t share, including a wheelchair-bound father who nonetheless exerts quite a bit of control over him.

Writer Joshua Dysart and artist William O’Neill create a gloomy black-and-white world within which it‘s fairly easy to quickly identify, and sympathize with the major characters whose motivations and morals are cloudy and uncertain at best. Published by Hurricane Comics.
