The Spice Girls reigned supreme as divas of the pop music world in the late 1990s, illustrating a stark contrast between their admittedly unpretentious and frivolous persona and the grunge rock and rap music of the time. They were five young women from England, (then four with the defection of Ginger), who espoused the credo of “Girl Power.”

Compiled by Queen Itchie, a columnist for NYPress, this magazine features the Spice Girls in strips that are loving tributes, scathing criticisms, and just plain bizarre from such alternative comic artists as Peter Bagge, (Hate), Gilbert Hernandez, (Love and Rockets), and Robert Crumb, (Mr. Natural). Also collected are text articles that examine each Spice Girl on levels that could be considered pretentious.

Since the vast majority of their fans are prepubescent girls, this title would be off limits to them due to some of the cartoons’ overly suggestive nature.
