The Wild

The Wild is Eastern Comics’ English translation of a Korean comic book about Paekman and Haesu, two men who are released from prison after an eight-month confinement. The story concerns their attempts to return to their old lives. Paekman finds only an empty house, and his mother gone, while Haesu takes a surreal ride on a night train to find his girlfriend Sunim.

Psychological in nature, The Wild is an interesting character study in comic book form. Tae-san Chang’s inspired artwork perfectly complements his moody script. While there are some traditional manga-style action scenes, the bulk of the story is told through dialogue and thought balloons, and Chang’s drawings bring a sense of urgency to every page.
