Invincibles

This black-and-white title from CFD Productions claims to feature “America’s Favorite Super-Heroes!”

What do you mean you’ve never heard of Web-Krawler, the American Commando, Fire Merchant, the American Shield, Megadroid, Darkling, Micro-Agent, and Storm-God? Well, you’ve surely heard of Roy Thomas (The Invaders, Avengers) and Rich Buckler (Fantastic Four, Saga of the Original Human Torch). They’re comics industry legends, and while these super-heroes might seem a bit derivative, they’re players in an intriguing tale.

In All-Star Squadron, Thomas and Buckler established a battalion of super-heroes into which every World War II-era DC and Quality Comics hero was drafted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This series is set in the mid-1960’s—a time of political and social upheaval in the United States—and President Lyndon B. Johnson has decreed that all of America’s super-heroes will serve in a group called the Retaliators. This time, however, they will not be fighting for the American cause so much as they will be catalogued and watched by the U.S. government. It’s a more sinister time than the Golden Age with its gung-ho patriotism, and Thomas and Buckler offer up some of their best work in years.
