My Sassy Girl

Based on 2001’s movie of the same name (which has been highly successful in Asia), written by Kim, My Sassy Girl tells the story of a young man who meets a teen who just can’t hold her liquor. Geon-woo is just trying to go to school and move on with his life after his stint in the military, but she keeps getting in the way.

Even though both film and comic book were big hits in Asia, they will probably not catch on as well stateside. The story of a guy who finds a basketcase of a woman and falls in love with her has often been told — recently, for example, in 2000’s Loser film — and the art in the series is as good as any from Comics One, which is among the best in Asian comics.

Unfortunately, that may make it too “out there” for anyone trying to read the story. For example, the story sharply cuts now and then to weird scenes with illegible text, which can be frustrating in the middle of a good, clear passage.

Readers interested in an unusually weird manga story might like My Sassy Girl; unfortunately, it will probably be too weird for most readers.
