B.P.R.D.: There’s Something Under My Bed
(Dark Horse, 2003)
™ and ©2003 Michael Mignola
In a lighthearted takeoff on the animated film Monsters, Inc., Hellboy’s staff of sleuths in The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense are assigned to investigate fishy childhood abductions. Naturally, scaly Abe Sapien and firestarter Liz Sherman snoop around children’s rooms for clues that their parents have missed—such as a stuffed toy monster under the bed.
Sure enough, boxes of furry, fanged frighteners have come alive in the abandoned House of Lost Toys and are holding the tykes hostage. But Abe has been locked up, as well, and these toothy toys plan to terrorize the tots some more. Can the cavalry arrive in time to save the day?
To flesh out the Hellboy franchise more before his big-budget movie breaks, the second-stringers of The BPRD have been promoted to the forefront. This benign one-shot by Joe Harris and Adam Pollina is good for a smile, but Abe has little to do but flap his gills. Perhaps The BPRD is hoping that Pixar believes imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
