Superman & Batman: Generations III

    (DC, 2003-2004)
™ and ©2003 DC Comics

What if heroes aged at the same rate of the rest of us? That’s the crux of John Byrne’s third foray into “Generations,” stories where DC heroes are introduced in the years of their first published history and age in real time. Thus, Superman and Batman started their official careers in the late 1930s and spawned generations of heroes that continue to the present day.

Generations III begins in 1925, when Saturn Girl from the Legion of Super-Heroes bursts into Clark Kent’s home in Smallville begging Superboy for help. Her time-traveling mission ends up taking readers through hundreds of years, alien invasions, and several new generations of heroes. Subtitled “An Imaginary Series,” the events of Generations III do not take place in the regular continuity of the modern DC universe. It’s an imaginary story. Aren’t they all?
