Hanging Out with the Dream King: Conversations with Neil Gaiman and His Collaborators
(Fantagraphics, 2004)
™ and © Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
Neil Gaiman was the writer and driving force behind the incredibly layered and intricate Sandman series that ran for 75 issues, (as well as various specials featuring other members of the cast), in the late 1980s until the mid 1990s. He is a singular talent, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have collaborators. In this enjoyable tome, Joseph McCabe talks not only to Neil Gaiman, but also to the pencillers, inkers, colorists, letterers and the editor of this groundbreaking series. This book contains an abundant number of anecdotes and behind–the–scenes information that every fan will find interesting. Want to know who were the models for Death and Destruction? All is revealed. Additionally, musicians Tori Amos and Alice Cooper (who collaborated with Gaiman on other projects), are interviewed for their thoughts about Gaiman.
Fair warning: Reading this book may compel you to dig out all your old Sandman issues and stay up much too late reflecting on the quality of that wonderful series.
— George Haberberger
